A MATTER OF TEMPERAMENT
From fiery passion and exuberant celebration to gentle reflection and playful humour, Market Harborough Orchestra invites you on a musical journey through the many moods of human nature.
We open with Berlioz’s dazzling Roman Carnival Overture, bursting with colour, energy and the excitement of an Italian festival. Shostakovich’s delightful Second Piano Concerto follows, combining sparkling virtuosity and mischievous wit with one of the most beautiful and tender slow movements in the piano repertoire.
The evening concludes with Carl Nielsen’s wonderfully inventive Second Symphony, The Four Temperaments. Inspired by a set of paintings depicting four traditional personality types, Nielsen brings each character vividly to life through music: the fiery and impulsive choleric, the calm and unhurried phlegmatic, the thoughtful and melancholic, and the cheerful, optimistic sanguine.
Full of dramatic contrasts, memorable melodies and unexpected twists, this is a concert that celebrates the extraordinary range of human emotions — and the power of music to express them all.
